Due to the COVID-19 outbreak, businesses are facing a time of unprecedented change. Some businesses, such as grocery stores, have been flourishing and are unable to keep up with the high volume of orders. Many more businesses, however, have been struggling to meet their quotas and have been forced to let go of their employees. These businesses include fashion retailers, restaurants, and beauty service companies such as nail salons.

Small businesses are at the heart of our economy. Due to their size, they often rely on local shoppers to strengthen their sales. This is why the lockdown and lack of foot traffic are particularly devastating to small businesses.

Here are some simple things that you can do to support businesses from your home while social distancing.

1. Leave a Stellar Review

Sounds simple enough, right? This is something that you can do to support small businesses without spending any money at all. Leaving a good review for a business on their Facebook or Yelp page can help generate more buzz and ensure that clients will support them once they’re allowed to reopen their doors. Do your part by leaving a rave review about the excellent service or product experience you had.

2. Buy a Gift Card

Spend money on what you normally would! Once the lockdown is over and we return to our normal routines, you can use these gift cards on products or services that you would normally use. Whether you chose to invest in your favorite fitness studio, clothing store or local apothecary, this simple purchase can have a large impact.

3. Start a New Hobby

Reading books, building puzzles, following workout videos and using cookbooks are all things that people have started doing in order to keep themselves busy and engaged. Not only do these things make the days more exciting, they can also help support smaller businesses that can provide you with the necessary supplies. Order reading materials, jigsaw puzzles, cookbooks and any necessary tools from local businesses to show your support. It’s a win-win!

4. Order Takeout

Restaurants are suffering. Although they’ve shut their doors to ensure safety, the majority are still open for delivery and pickup. Give yourself a dinner break and order from your favorite local spot to support the people who are still going to work.

5. Shop Online

This may seem obvious, but it may be the easiest and most efficient way to help support the businesses that you love. During this challenging time, many companies have invested in quicker shipping methods and online websites to ensure that they can provide their customers with the products they are looking for. If possible, use these services to show your support.
