Retail professionals will descend on the Javits Centre for NRF 2022: Retail’s Big Show in exactly one month! The Javits Center in Manhattan’s West Side has been the site of Retail’s Big Show for years. It’s the busiest convention center in the US and a recent US$1.5 billion expansion added 1.2 million square feet of event-related space.
In addition to new meeting rooms, a ballroom and a four-level staging area for trucks that deliver exhibits, the Javits Centre now includes Fresh and Fast, the first touchless café in any convention centre in the US. It features Amazon’s Just Walk Out technology and will sell freshly-made sandwiches, salads as well as grab-and-go items.
The Javits Center’s rooftop experienced a huge revamp too. The 200,000-square-foot space now includes thousands of solar panels, a glass-enclosed pavilion that can accommodate up to 1500 people (pictured above) and a one-acre farm.
The pavilion is adjacent to an outdoor terrace and an orchard with 32 apple and six pear trees. The working farm is expected to grow up to 40,000 pounds of produce a year, which will be served onsite by the Javits Center’s caterer, Cultivated. Two underground retention cisterns will capture and treat rainwater for irrigation.
The one-acre farm builds on the Javits Center’s robust sustainability program, which already included a 6.75-acre green roof that serves as a habitat for wildlife. The green roof has become a habitat for 27 bird and five bat species. It also consists of honeybee hives that produce honey. Both the farm and green roof absorb storm water run-off.
Free tours of the roof are possible from April to October. Come January 2022, there will be lots to see under the Javits’ roof too!
